Corporate companies need to Act quickly

With the onset of a seemingly harsh winter and the roads become more treacherous, recent research suggests thatthe corporates are only operating a very basic fleet management policy when it comes to company car driver safety.

Almost a third of companies place the onus on the company car driver to ensure that they carry out regular maintenance checks such as oil and water levels and tyre pressures. Most do highlight the responsibility when the car is first passed over to their care but then leave them to it, which could be grounds for breaking Duty of Care obligations. Latest road accident figures show the major number of accidents happen in the early Winter months of November and December. A company car handbook is a legal requirement but only around a third provide one.

For example, less than a third provide hands-free kit for mobiles, but just under half of company car drivers still talk on the phone whilst moving around. Most companies believe their drivers and don’t check for previous motoring convictions which could render their insurance invalid. The worse case is that a disappointing 85% don’t ask about the number of previous accidents someone has had, whether fault or non-fault.

Fleet management is a complex and very time consuming exercise, but its vitally important that regular maintenance checks are carried out and drivers made fully aware of how to stay safe on UK roads today.
